The legal minimum allowable tyre tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre’s width. However, having a remaining tread depth of just 1.6mm does mean that a car travelling at 50mph in wet conditions will take almost 8 metres further to stop than the same car fitted with tyres with a tread depth of 3.0mm and over 13 metres further than the same car fitted with new tyres.*
In addition to the dangers posed by driving with illegal tyres the legal penalties are also severe. For each illegal tyre there is a maximum penalty of three points on your licence and a £2500 fine.
